This needs assessment is a comprehensive summary of the barriers a single mother making minimum wage and her son with Down Syndrome face when accessing medical care, and the resources available to them. This needs assessment is based on a hypothetical scenario assigned in my Community Health class, Spring 2020 semester. This was done as a group project with four other classmates. I contributed most significantly to the Signs and Symptoms, Insurance, and Economic barriers portions. To access to full Needs Assessment, click here.

This piece showcases my ability to:

  • Analyze the needs of a certain audience based on available resources and barriers
  • Locate resources for a health need that are catered to an individual’s socioeconomic status
  • Collaborate with a group to create a cohesive needs assessment for a specific population

Writing this case study taught me how to work with a group on a single writing piece by using each member’s strengths. I also gained a greater understanding of how unattainable healthcare can be for those with lower incomes, especially when caring for a disabled child.
